Michael Holmes Golemis
Michael Holmes Golemis is the co-owner and principal coach of Hurricane Boxing. He is a lifelong boxer and a Level III Elite USA Boxing Trainer. He obtained his certification from the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Each of the trainers at the club has been hand-picked and personally trained and certified by Michael and USA Boxing following USA Boxing standards and guidelines (see www.USABoxing.org).
A Charleston, S.C. native, Michael compiled an amateur boxing record of 165 wins and 12 defeats. He won several amateur championships in both Carolinas, including the South Carolina Golden Gloves in 1961, the Carolinas Golden Gloves in 1971, the South Carolina Junior Olympics in 1968, the Eastern Collegiate Boxing Championships in 1974 and many other titles. He was trained by the late Hall of Famer Sonny Snell. After retiring from the ring, Golemis has continued to involve himself in boxing and his community. He provides boxing instruction for men, women and children of all ages. Golemis has coached boxing at every level, most recently as head coach at The Citadel Military College. He was a volunteer football coach at James Island Recreation Center and coached five years at Bishop England High School. He has worked with the South Carolina Boxing Commission as a referee and judge throughout the state from 1992 until the present.
A graduate of the College of Charleston with a BS in Physical Education Sport Management, Michael currently resides on James Island with his daughter Bernadette and son Coal. He has received awards for community service from the mayor of Charleston, the chief of police, school principals, and other officials. Golemis has the reputation of never refusing help to any individual or group who needs it.
